the fourth lp from menomena due out july 29. i cannot stop listening to this album, early front runner for one of my favorite albums of the year. "tithe" is just flooring.

after going almost three years to the date without a proper full-length release, matthew robert cooper re-establishes himself on similes through new means with the addition of vocals and discernible instrumentation which cooper had previously never experimented with. the vocals are hushed and monotone, vaguely reminding me of brian eno, especially on the second track "the motion makes me last" which is the stand-out track to me after only a couple listens.

this is a shitty rip (only 128kbps) but it will suffice for now. i will re-up a better quality soon

gareth dickson - collected recordings (2009)

'collected recordings' consists of songs from two of his prior albums (solina sea, spruce goose) and previously unreleased tracks. when i was first getting familiar with this album, i would hear certain songs playing on shuffle and mistake them for nick drake songs that i had either forgotten about or had yet to become familiar with. a perfect contrast between gentle finger-picked guitar, dreamy folk vocals, and ambient a-la brian eno or labradford. probably my favorite album of 2009. like a dream you never want to leave.

laura gibson - beasts of seasons (2009)

"gibson wrote these songs in a room overlooking one of the oldest graveyards in portland, and to say these oppressive surroundings colour the subsequent recording is something of an understatement. although it’s probably not the first disc you’d reach for to get the party started, its languid tone rarely becomes overbearing." tonight at 11 p.m. marks the beginning of the leonids meteor shower, peaking in the midnight hours until sunrise. make sure you check this out, it is supposed to be one of the greatest meteor showers of our lifetime! on with the music...which i find to be apt for the evening's stargazing (get your headphones ready):

this is one of the most gorgeous ambient records i've ever heard. a side project of jón Þór “jónsi” birgisson (from sigur rós) and his boyfriend, alex somers (of parachutes). majestic magicians of minimalism, these are sonic pieces of art that should be listened to carefully as if viewing a painting and the tracks will reveal their subtle, stunning beauty. this is the sound of love.

The folk genre lost its populist edge a long time ago. Extending into the realms of psychedelic jams, indie rock, post-whatever, and a slew of other styles, it’s lost a lot of its original directness. At the same time it has gained a wide array of techniques and particular sounds that have often come to enhance its sincerity and power of expression, among other things. Heather Woods Broderick’s debut is a very fine example of folk breaking apart classification and wandering into the territory of music-as-is. Not in a formal, modernist sense, but in a sort of experience where the name of the genre is almost devoid of meaning; it’s now only a reference to mere moments within the music that quickly fade away and morph into something else entirely as the seconds pass – an ambient part transforms into folk, which in turn transforms into chamber music, and so on.
